I would consider the culture of normalised sexual misconduct in Hollywood a much bigger factor in forgiving Polanski than idolisation of his work. Obviously I have no way of knowing that but looking at some of the names that signed the petition (Weinstein, Allen, Ratner), there’s definitely a trend.
