Albrecht’s eldest daughter Anna (before 1280–1327), as a pawn in her father’s aspirations to succeed to the thrones of the Empire and Bohemia, was married to the Margrave Hermann of Brandenburg and subsequently to Duke Henry VI of Silesia-Breslau.
Albrecht was the eldest son of Rudolf I and Gertrud of Hohenberg. Initially active in the Habsburg patrimonial dominions in Alsace, his presence in Austria is not recorded until 1279. In 1281 he was invested with the administration of the former Babenberg lands that had been seized by Ottokar Přemysl.
When he was 18, Frederick plotted to flee to England with his close friend Hans Hermann von Katte and other junior army officers. Frederick and Katte were subsequently arrested and imprisoned in Küstrin.
