Nietzsche was born October 15, 1844, in R ö cken, a small village in Prussian Saxony, on the birthday of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, after whom he was named by his father Karl Ludwig, 31, and his mother Franziska (n é e Oehler), 18. His father, as well as both of his grandfathers, were Lutheran ministers.
