STEUBEN, FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON. (1730–1794). Inspector General of the Continental Army. Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was the grandson of Augustin Steube, a minister of the German Reformed Church. The grandfather inserted the "von" in the family name about 1708 as a sign of aristocratic status, although he technically had no right to do so.
