This science-fiction film, so admired today, was not a big box-office success in its time and the production costs almost put the Ufa film studios out of business.
Lang’s first project upon his return to Germany was the futuristic masterpiece Metropolis (1927), which he spent most of 1925 and 1926 shooting for UFA, nearly exhausting the considerable resources of the studio.
