    In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
    Carter G. Woodson is considered to be the Father of Black History, as he was the son of former slaves and knew how important education was to secure freedom.
    11 years later, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans.
    Prior to this, few people studied Black history and it wasn’t included in textbooks.
    It wasn’t until 1976 that president Gerald Ford extended the week to a whole month, creating Black History Month.
    Black History Month is observed in February in the United States and Canada, and October in the United Kingdom.
