There’s a certain alchemy to a Fast and Furious movie; one that director Justin Lin perfected in the outrageously enjoyable Fast 5. That film rejuvenated the franchise and solidified its place as a beloved – and prodigiously profitable - global phenomenon. The twisty, turny continuity (which finally catches up with itself in Furious 7), insanely over the top action, elements of an endearingly cheesy soap, quips, tried and true Fastisms (”I ain’t got friends…”), and a surprisingly genuine heart at the core combine to create a singular series.

Furious 7 - the first in the franchise without Lin at the helm since Tokyo Drift - manages to deliver everything that Fast and Furious aficionados want. Most significantly, though, helmer James Wan handled the tragic death of lead Paul Walker with admirable grace, ultimately creating an emotionally impactful farewell. As most know, Walker died in a car crash in November of 2013, halfway through production on Furious 7. It’s a testament to the filmmakers that one is able to give over to the good-natured absurdity of this world for the lion’s share of the viewing experience. It’s only at the close that Wan pauses for a wrenching, bittersweet tribute to to the actor, which is achieved with dignity and care.

Screenwriter Chris Morgan – who’s been with the franchise for the last five films – deftly weaves in Brian O’Conner’s exit with pre-existing themes. Family - the one we are born with and those we create - has always been at the center of Fast and Furious films. When Brian and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) made the transition from international fugitives and master heisters to parents, it was the natural evolution of their relationship. Furious 7 finds the former confronted by the push/pull of his desire to be a family man and his longing for an existence filled with larger-than-life exploits – a plot point that was likely already in place when Morgan was tasked with re-working this script. As a result, when Brian’s arc comes to fruition, it feels organic.

Walker’s work in the film was completed via doubles – including brothers Caleb and Cody Walker - previously unused footage from the earlier films, and technology that allowed the team to digitally overlay his face on his stand-ins. Astonishingly, other than a few key sequences towards the end of the runtime, it’s hard to tell which moments are altered. More to the point, the film mostly sweeps the viewer into the lavish fantasy-world that is Fast and Furious.

Furious 7 director James Wan faced a heartbreaking challenge when lead Paul Walker tragically died in the middle of production on the film. So it’s something of a miracle that he and the team behind this escapist series have managed to not only deliver another delightfully over-the-top joy ride, but also elegantly honor the actor at the heart of it...

  6. Furious 7: Without a doubt, this is the biggest fast and furious movie to date. Everything is bigger. The action scenes are bigger, the car scenes are even faster, and of course, "The Rock" is bigger. Furious 7 was already highly anticipated, and then tragedy struck, Paul Walker was killed in a car crash when filming.
