Referencing either the film or the book, "The Gangs of New York" is such a red flag that I'm not going to spend much time addressing it. Both are works of fiction. Herbert Asbury invented most of what is in that book out of his own imagination. It is not a place to look for historically accurate information about Tammany Hall.
