In 1480, Geertgen took up residence at St John's Brethren monastery in Haarlem - hence the name ‘tot Sint Jans’. While not a monk, he worked for the order as a lay brother, painting a large altarpiece for the church.

Paintings by Geertgen tot Sint Jans. The name Geertgen tot Sint Jans means 'little Gerard of Saint John', and refers to the Brethren of Saint John at Haarlem, a lay order to which the artist presumably belonged. Not much is known of his life; works are attributed to him mostly on stylistic grounds.
According to Van Mander, Gerrit Gerritsz, better known as Geertgen tot Sint Jans, lived with the Knights of St John of Jerusalem (‘Sint Jansheeren’) in their Commandery in Haarlem, from which he took his name.
