He was known for his energetic and athletic dancing style and sought to create a new form of American dance accessible to the general public, which he called "dance for the common man".
His best known performances are in films such as An American in Paris (1951), Anchors Aweigh (1945), and Singin' in the Rain (1952). Throughout his career, he also directed films (some of which he starred in), most notably the 1969 film Hello, Dolly!, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
