The story goes that when he arrived in France in 1917, at the head of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), he dramatically declared, "Lafayette, we are here!"
John J. Pershing, (born Sept. 13, 1860, Laclede, Mo., U.S.—died July 15, 1948, Washington, D.C.), U.S. army officer. He graduated from West Point and served on the western frontier (1886–98), in the Spanish-American War, in the Philippines (1899–1903, 1906–13), and as commander of a punitive raid against Pancho Villa (1916).
John J. Pershing was born September 13, 1860, in Laclede Missouri to John Fletcher Pershing and Ann Elizabeth Thompson. He graduated from the United States Military Academy and was assigned to the 6th cavalry in 1886 and participated in campaigns in the Southwest and Northern Plains, including the Wounded Knee campaign.
John J. Pershing led all American forces during World War I. He emphasized staff work and offensive operations and fought successfully to keep all U.S. forces under his control.

The recent decision to turn Pershing Park, near the White House, into a National World War I Memorial has re-focused attention on the commander of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.)----General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. The man himself had a wide and varied career even before the War.
