George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence. His father the Duke of York, a leading figure in the Wars of the Roses, had challenged the Lancastrian claim to England's throne and was defeated and killed at the Battle of Wakefield in December 1460. His head, adorned with a paper crown in derision, was placed over Micklegate at York.
