- About the Bridge
The Gerald Desmond Bridge was a 1968 through arch bridge that carried five lanes of Ocean Boulevard from Interstate 710 in Long Beach, California, west across the Back Channel to Terminal Island. The bridge was named after Gerald Desmond, a prominent civic leader and former city attorney for the City of Long Beach.
With two towers reaching 515 feet into the sky, it is the second-tallest cable-stayed bridge in the United States. The bridge opened to traffic in October 2020 and was officially named the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge by the California Legislature in August 2022.
The Port of Long Beach has installed several live web cameras to enable the public to follow the construction of the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project and eventual demolition of the existing bridge over the next several years.

The Port of Long Beach, Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project is a $1.56 billion replacement of an obsolete five-lane structure constructed in 1968 with a state-of-the-art, six-lane bridge. It is located at the southern end of State Route 710 in Los Angeles County.
