Melody is the ghost of a young girl who befriends Phoebe Spengler.
Before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
At age 16, Melody died in an accidental fire at a tenement after she lit the last match in a Melody Diner matchbook near Washington Square Park. Her family also died in the fire. She manifested as a ghost some time later and was unable to cross over. She believed at one point that the key to her moving on had to do with the matchbook she held onto but made peace with the fact she would never do so. Melody spent the decades playing pranks on people in the park. She became adept at chess.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire History
One night in the summer of 2024, Phoebe Spengler went to Washington Square Park and set up chess on a table. The opposing pieces moved on their own. Melody manifested to Phoebe's disappointment. Melody was weirded out by Phoebe not running away like most people. Phoebe offered to leave. They continued playing. Phoebe complimented her flames. Melody thanked her and explained she turned alive in a horrible tenement fire. Phoebe contended she was lucky she was not burnt to a crisp. Melody clarified she died before her face melted off. Phoebe thought that was a bonus. Melody declared checkmate, to Phoebe's surprise. Melody pointed out she had a long time to practice. Phoebe reset the board. They revealed their names to each other. Phoebe told her hers was a cool name. Melody thanked her and remarked she inherited it then took out a Melody Diner matchbox. Phoebe explained she was being sarcastic. Melody admitted she kinda liked her. They played another round. Phoebe asked what was the worst part of being a ghost. Melody replied it was being 16 years old for an eternity unless she finished her uncompleted business. Phoebe asked what the best part was. Melody replied "doing this." Phoebe looked up and Melody was gone. The next night, Phoebe answered a phone call to the Firehouse. Podcast suited up to help with the bust. They arrived at Melody Diner. a waitress gestured them to a booth. The ghost turned out to be Melody. Phoebe hesitated to shoot Melody. Melody vanished and Phoebe shot out some window glass. Back at the Firehouse, Phoebe hid the Proton Pack under her bed. She saw Melody outside her window and straightened up. Phoebe claimed she had great aim and would have caught her if she really wanted to. Melody joked she felt a warm rush of relief. Phoebe asked her if she wanted to hang out. Melody pointed out she was inviting her to hang out in her ghost extermination headquarters. Phoebe watched her transvaporate inside. They went to the garage bay then Melody went down through the floor. Phoebe found her staring at the Containment Unit. Melody wondered what happened when a ghost was done. Phoebe revealed she saw it and it was really beautiful: particles lose bonds and float into space. Phoebe recalled Quantum Physics suggests the dead become part of the fabric of the universe. Melody thought that sounded cool and asked if she believed that. Phoebe replied she believed in Quantum Physics. Melody mused her family was there on the other side. Phoebe asked why she was not with them. Melody had no idea and lit a match. She opened the matchbook and the match was back in. Phoebe identified it as an emotionally charged anchor that keeps her tethered to the world. Melody revealed the last match was the one that burned her family alive. Phoebe remarked that would do it. Melody added it was an accident and used to think the matchbook was the key to moving on but made peace with the fact she was not going anywhere. Phoebe felt bad for her. Callie checked on Phoebe in the basement. Melody was gone. Garraka's thoughts reached Melody as she walked down a street. She claimed she was going as fast as she could then asked if it had to be Phoebe. Garraka spoke. Melody stated she understood. The lights around her came back on.
The Ghostbusters Japan Twitter account first revealed a ghost named Melody would appear in the movie and was a friend of Phoebe. On February 28, 2024, the Phoebe bio posted mentions she "deepens a bond with a certain ghost." Actress Marin Honda was announced to be dubbing the voice for "Melody, a ghost who develops friendship with Phoebe."
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Trivia
•Gil Kenan gave "Sylvie and the Ghost" (1946) to Emily Alyn Lind to watch for preparation. The story was about the ghost of a man who fell in love with a woman who reminded him of his love interest in his past life. •The chess gag was done with cables and radio-controlled servos. •Emily Alyn Lind didn't know the character she was portraying was a ghost until right when filming started but was suspicious when Melody had a line of "Oh, don't worry. I get it. I'm like a hundred years old. You got a name?" •Emily Alyn Lind didn't have to wear anything like a mocap suit for her filming. •Emily Alyn Lind didn't see the finished version of Melody until she recorded ADR because Gil Kenan wanted the performance to be more human than ghostly. •There initially were plans for Melody to always be floating and would be achieved with a parallelogram but the idea was abandoned. •Melody's flames was a mixture of brandy and hand sanitizer that was spread all over a dummy then lit. The VFX team filmed it. The visual effects house superimposed it onto Emily Alyn Lind in the scene. •Melody's dress was inspired by actress Lillian Gish's iconic costumes. •Melody coming down the fire pole and through the floor was a direct homage to "Sylvie and the Ghost". •Mckenna Grace does not consider Phoebe a romantic person and thinks Melody was just a person who that made her feel seen and they connected but they're relationship is open to interpretation. Gil Kenan commented they were two people in search of a resolution and a kinship forms between them then they both develop and grow. Emily Alyn Lind called it two old souls on a deeper level beyond labels. •Melody's parents named Melody Diner after her.
