Gian Galeazzo died in 1494 at the Palazzo Ducale, the summer home of the Visconti and Sforza families. During that time, he received a visit from Charles VIII of France . According to the Italian historian Francesco Guicciardini in his History of Italy ( Italian : La Historia di Italia ), he was poisoned by his uncle, Ludovico il Moro .

Galeazzo Maria Sforza was born in Fermo, near the family's castle of Girifalco, the first son of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti. At the death of his father (8 March 1466), Galeazzo was in France at the head of a military expedition to help King Louis XI of France against Charles I of Burgundy .

Galeazzo Maria's heir, Gian Galeazzo, was only eight years old at the time, and it was Galeazzo Maria's brother Ludovico who finally controlled Milan after the resulting power struggle. Although he was supposedly Gian Galeazzo's guardian, Ludovico refused to give up power when Gian married Isabella of Naples in 1489, and a feud with Naples ensued.
After a power struggle, Galeazzo Maria’s brother, Ludovico il Moro (“the moor,” so called because of his dark complexion), seized control. Ludovico Sforza (1452–1508) was the second son of Francesco Sforza. He acted as regent for his nephew from 1480 until 1494. When Gian Galeazzo died, Ludovico assumed the title of duke himself.
