Plot. After being wounded at Antietam, Captain Robert Gould Shaw is sent home to Boston on medical leave. His well-connected father obtains for him a promotion to colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first all-black regiments in the Union Army.

Synopsis. During the American Civil War, the Massachusetts Infantry Regiment engages Confederate forces in the bloody Battle of Antietam. Captain Robert Gould Shaw ( Matthew Broderick) is injured in the battle and assumed lost, but is found alive by a gravedigger named John Rawlins ( Morgan Freeman) and sent to a field hospital.
