Quick Facts About Golden Gate Park's History. • The park was originally created on 1013 acres of windswept sand dunes in an unincorporated area of the Peninsula, known as the Outside Lands, starting in 1870 by surveyor, designer, and first Superintendent William Hammond Hall. Today, with an addition, the acreage stands at 1,017 acres.

Golden Gate Park is a 1,017-acre, three-mile-long urban park that stretches from the famed Haight-Ashbury neighborhood to Ocean Beach to the west. The park is also bordered by the Cole Valley, North of the Panhandle, Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods.
