Gonzaga University (GU) (/ ɡ ə n ˈ z æ ɡ ə / ghən-ZAG-ə) is a private Jesuit university in Spokane, Washington. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Founded in 1887 by Joseph Cataldo, an Italian-born priest and Jesuit missionary, the university is named after the young Jesuit saint Aloysius Gonzaga.

He supervised the Jesuits working in the Pacific Northwest and the missions they had established across Montana, down into Idaho and across Washington.
