The first time the term was ever used was to describe the Doors in 1967. But they didn't describe themselves this way. This was how music critic John Stickney described them. One of the defining characteristics of being goth is denying that you're goth.
I personally don't like the changes, but it's probably just different. More people know about goth now which can be good and bad. The music seems to take a lot of inspiration from older goth music which is cool because it's a good sound but it doesn't seem like people are doing a whole lot that hasn't already been done before.
