Grand Forks is 74 miles (119 km) north of the Fargo-Moorhead area and 145 miles (233 km) south of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Grand Forks is on the western bank of the Red River of the North in an area known as the Red River Valley. The term "forks" refers to the forking of the Red River with the Red Lake River near downtown Grand Forks.

It has a population of slightly over 50,000 and is now the county seat of Grand Forks County. It is the third-largest city in the state after Fargo and Bismarck. Across the river is East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

The host unit is the 319th Reconnaissance Wing assigned to the Air Combat Command operating E/RQ-4B Global Hawk remotely piloted aircraft, in the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance role. During the Cold War, GFAFB was a major installation of the Strategic Air Command, with B-52 bombers, KC-135 tankers, and Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Grand Forks Air Force Base was established on 1 December 1955, with construction beginning in the fall of that year. It was occupied for use on 28 January 1957, and was named after the neighboring city of Grand Forks.

The Masonic Center (also known as the Masonic Temple) is a Renaissance style building in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was designed by architect Joseph Bell DeRemer and was constructed by the Dinnie Brothers in 1913. It replaced the first Masonic Temple in Grand Forks, which had burned, and which was later reconstructed as the Stratford Building.
