Brussels Flower Carpet. Once every two years, the rectangular shaped ‘square’ at the Grand Place turns into a carpet of fresh flowers dubbed the ‘Flower Carpet’ or ‘Flowercarpet’. The elaborate patterns and colours are planned well ahead of time and then displayed in a single tableau on the cobblestones of the town square.
The flower carpet on the Grand-Place in Brussels is the ultimate expression of ephemeral art, as the work is destined to disappear after just four days on show. Every two years, on the weekend of 15 August, the most beautiful Grand-Place in the world is transformed into an immense showcase of colours, to the delight of visitors aged 7 to 77.

Every 2 years, the Grand-Place of Brussels is covered with a carpet of begonias. Officially, the first flower carpet was born in 1971 on the Grand-Place. This carpet of 77m x 24m is realized in several stages and installed by approximately 120 volunteers. It is installed only for 1 weekend (Assumption Day). The access to the Grand-Place is free.
