It was a retitling of the then-ongoing second volume of the main X-Men series, and shares the series' numbering, as opposed to creating a different ongoing series with a new number one issue.

Morrison's stint on X-Men is considered one of their more controversial runs, as they radically altered many aspects of the book. They introduced many new concepts including the Weapon Plus program, Fantomex, secondary mutations, the drug Kick, and portrayed Magneto as a senile genocidal madman.
At Marvel, Morrison wrote a three-year run on New X-Men and created Marvel Boy for the publisher's Marvel Knights imprint. Between 2016 and 2018, Morrison served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Heavy Metal magazine. Morrison's work has drawn critical acclaim.
