Located on the Rogue River about thirty miles northwest of Medford, Grants Pass is the county seat of Josephine County. The area’s Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, has long been a source of pride for residents, so much so that in 1920 engineer John Hampshire donated a sign to the city proclaiming “It’s the Climate!”

Grants Pass was named in honor of General U.S. Grant’s 1863 victory at Vicksburg, Originally Grant’s Pass, the apostrophe was dropped after 1900. Grants Pass was a stagecoach stop in the 1860s. It became a railhead when the Oregon-California Railroad (now Southern Pacific) was completed in 1884.
