  3. When visiting Ghent for a few hours as we travelled across Belgium we walked past the stunningly well reserved 10th Century moated castle that is the Gravensteen. The current castle dates from 1180 and was the residence of the Counts of Flanders until 1353. It was subsequently re-purposed as a court, prison, mint, and even as a cotton factory.

Last admission is at 5:00 PM since it takes about an hour for visitors to fully experience the castle interior. Gravensteen Castle is only closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
