Hines co-starred with Mikhail Baryshnikov in the 1985 film White Nights, and co-starred with Billy Crystal in the 1986 buddy cop film Running Scared. He starred in the 1989 film Tap opposite Sammy Davis Jr. (in Davis' last screen performance).

It is tempting to wonder what sort of a movie might have resulted if they had just been allowed to dance for two hours, but that, I suppose, is too much to hope for.
December 2, 2020. When White Nights opened in American theaters on December 6, 1985, it was a decidedly risky proposition. Mikhail Baryshnikov was a massive ballet star, but hadn’t spent much time acting on camera. Gregory Hines was a lauded tap dancer on Broadway and in films, but had never been given a dramatic leading role.
Tharp teamed up with director Taylor Hackford for the film White Nights, starring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The dance sequences in this film function differently than in Tharp’s previous projects. In Amadeus, the dancing operates as a “play-within-a-play;” in Hair, as one of the musical-theater components.
