I believe it might have been two reasons: Mega Evolutions exist to give old Pokémon a “glow-up”, not just in designs to sell more merch (though that was certainly part of it) but to address the power creep that had been accumulating in the competitive scene and give older Pokémon more of a “fighting chance” so more people can use their favorites.
