George Guest was born in Bangor, Gwynedd. [1] His father was an organist and Guest assisted him by acting as organ blower. He became a chorister at Bangor Cathedral and subsequently at Chester Cathedral, where he took organ lessons from the sub-organist, Dr Roland Middleton. He passed the examinations for ARCO in 1940 and FRCO in 1942.
In 1951 the choir director, Robin Orr, resigned to focus on composition, leaving the post to Guest. In the coming years, Guest, not least because of a healthy rivalry with David Willcocks who was director of the Choir of King's College, vastly improved St. John's choral standards.
When, in 1951, Orr decided to leave to concentrate on composition, he persuaded a reluctant college council to take on the young organist. Guest was to surprise and stimulate the old dons: he proved himself a charismatic teacher and intelligent musician, well liked by the clergy and a healthy influence on the college council.
