Nov 7, 2012 · About this group. This group has been set up specifically to enable people to swap memories of their childhood in Hackney around the 1940's - 1970's. Have a bloody good laugh of our time during that period because no one else would be able to understand and for a general chit chat - catching up with old friends, long lost relations & neighbours.
The borough was one of twenty-eight metropolitan boroughs created by the London Government Act 1899. It was the successor to the vestry of the parish of Hackney, which had been the local authority since 1894. Between 1855 and 1894 the parish had been administered with Stoke Newington as the Hackney District. [1]

The St Augustine Tower is present in the coat of arms of the London Borough of Hackney, showing its symbolism and importance to the area. The Tower is impressive, and a visit to Hackney’s oldest remaining building is essential if you’re a history buff. The tower is open to the public on the final Sunday of every month between 2 and 4:30pm.

Our collections – 600 years of history. We are always adding to our collections. Our oldest record dates from 1356 and we are actively collecting now. All records are connected to the London borough of Hackney, which, before 1965, was three separate metropolitan boroughs – Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington.
