The Hang was developed by the instrument builders of PANArt, Felix Rohner and Sabina Scherer. It was the result of many years of research on the steelpan and the study of the diverse collection of instruments from around the world: Gong, Gamelan, Ghatam, drums, bells, Singing Saw.
PANArt has not always exclusively made the HANG. They (being Felix and Sabine) conducted long research into the varying aspects of forming instruments from steel. Much of the inspiration came from the traditional steel pans of the Caribbean islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Switzerland was well-known for its manufacture of the steel pan.
The “handpan”, “Hang Drum”, “pantam”, and “UFO Drum” are different names for a closely related family of relatively young musical instruments. The instrument is made of two convex sheets of steel glued together. They have tuned notes on the top and sometimes bottom half that can be played with the hands.

A Hang Drum, also occasionally known as a Hank Drum, is essentially two metal bowls sandwiched and sealed around the edges to create a hollow cavity inside. On the bottom side (known as the "Gu" side) a hole allows the sound to resonate and amplify properly thanks to a property of physics known as Helmholtz Resonance.
In February 2007 Dennis Havlena, inspired by the physical properties of the Tambiro and the tone layout of the Hang, created a steel tongue drum with a circular cross pattern layout from an empty 20-pound propane tank. The name 'Hank Drum' came from a combination of "Hang" and "tank".
