The prayer praises God for miraculously delivering the Jews from the hands of the Greeks in the time of the Maccabees. Below is the version of Al Hanisim recited on Hanukkah, in Hebrew, transliteration and English translation.
Prior to lighting the Hanukkah candles, the following two blessings are said: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי, אֱלוֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִידְשָׁנוּ בְּמִצוֹתָיו וְצִיוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל חַנֻכָה. Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melech ha’olam asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel chahnookah.
