Before moving to Canterbury the elder Blooms lived in South Africa, where Harry Bloom (1913–1981) was a fierce fighter in the struggle against apartheid, a policy of racial segregation. When Orlando was only four years old, his father died after suffering a stroke.
Harry Saul Bloom (1 January 1913—28 July 1981) was a Jewish South African journalist, novelist, and political activist. Born Solomon Harris Bloom, he was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand and subsequently became an advocate in Johannesburg.
Episode in the Transvaal, an outstanding novel about apartheid, published by Doubleday (US) in l955 and Collins (UK) in l956 made Harry Bloom into an internationally esteemed writer. It was followed by two other books by Bloom - a highly acclaimed novel Whittakers Wife.
