Hayden Planetarium. The Hayden Planetarium (often called "The Hayden Sphere" or "The Great Sphere") has, since 2000, been one of the two main attractions within the Rose Center. It was established by the State of New York in 1933, some of the funding coming from philanthropist Charles Hayden. [7]

Oct 11, 2013 · When the Hayden Planetarium opened in October 1935, it was only the fourth planetarium in the United States. Inside the 75-foot dome, many New Yorkers saw, for the first time, all of the stars visible to the unaided eye, as well as the Sun, Moon, planets, and our spiral galaxy, the Milky Way.
The Hayden Planetarium has been a premier exhibition and educational space since its opening in 1935, acting as the figurehead for the AMNH Department of Astronomy.
