Leland (1843 – 1932) Born in Barton to a hard working farm family, Henry Leland carried into his life the strength and quality of his family’s work ethic, adding to it his gift for and love of precision. He had learned precision toolmaking making rifles during the Civil War and later invented the first mechanical barber’s clippers.
The Cadillac Motor Company was created in 1902 out of the remains of Henry Ford’s second failed attempt at a car company. The first Cadillacs made used Ford-designed bodies matched to an engine created by the company’s new director, Henry M. Leland.
