Oct 16, 2019 · Carter’s death allegedly made Leland decide that Cadillac would rid its cars of the hand starter crank. So he called on Charles Kettering and Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co., or DELCO, which had already developed a high-energy spark ignition for Cadillac that debuted in 1910.
He used the Leland and Faulconer factory started by Leland in 1894 to tool bicycles and marine engines. By 1899 it was making automobile engines for Ransom Olds. The first Cadillac cars used a Ford designed body with Leland’s Cadillac engine. They were promoted at the 1903 New York Auto Show, and sales manager William Metzger took over 1000 orders.

by admin. The classic car period of 1940-1990 is the era when the Cadillac name stood for luxury, style, and power in imposingly large packages. Henry M. Leland started the company in 1902, and Cadillac became notable for its ability to manufacture high-quality cars on a large scale.
Enter Henry M. Leland, a man known for his meticulous engineering and unwavering commitment to quality. Tasked with salvaging the remains of Ford’s venture, Leland saw an opportunity. He envisioned cars not as flimsy contraptions, but as rolling testaments to precision and reliability.
Leland sold Cadillac to General Motors in 1909, but remained an executive until 1917. He would leave GM after a disagreement with William C. Durant, a noted pacifist, who refused a request from the U.S. Government to produce aircraft engines for WWI.
