I am in my wife’s childhood home outside Aix-en-Provence where I wrote much of my book, Shooting Martha. I can see Mont Sainte-Victoire, which was painted many times by Cézanne.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. I have finished three novels and I’m about to move on to the short stories. I have never read any of his work before. Most of us are familiar with the films and TV shows, but the books are far more entertaining than I ever expected.
Samuel Beckett. I was introduced to his plays in drama school and didn’t realise he also wrote novels until much later. He has such a confident grasp of language and is beautifully absurd. There’s not a syllable out of place.
I write at a desk most of the time, with a sofa behind the desk to lie back and read on when I run out of ideas. French doors open out into the garden and the walls are covered with photos, drawings and typewritten cards.
I don’t think I’ve ever come across any character who resembles me. I have reread The Sea,the Seaby Iris Murdoch many times and its protagonist Charles Arrowby is a veteran actor looking back on a theatrical life of missed chances. He might have been me had I missed such chances, but I’m happy to say I have been lucky in love.
As my childhood hero, John Lennon had an enormous influence on who I am today. In that regard I would also have to say Patti Smith. Nowadays it’s Bob Mortimer, whom I’ve never met, and my wife, Hermine, whom I have, quite a few times. Shooting Marthais published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson, at £14.99
