We have two regular submission periods per year: March 1 through May 31; September 1 through November 30 Additionally, our 2024 submission-fee free period is Dec. 1–14, 2024; Occasionally, we may open a call for special theme issues and other magazine-related projects.
Hippocampus Magazine is an exclusively online publication set out to entertain, educate and engage writers and readers of creative nonfiction. Each issue features memoir excerpts, personal essays, reviews, interviews and craft articles.

Sep 1, 2022 · We’re sharing a quick update about a change to our next reading period, which was originally set to open September 1, 2022: Hippocampus Magazine will reopen for creative nonfiction submissions (essay/flash CNF) October 15, 2022, and will accept submissions through Jan. 15, 2023.

HippoCamp: A Conference for Creative Nonfiction may be on hiatus (aiming for a 2025 return), but the team at Hippocampus Magazine is still bringing CNF knowledge and know-how to you through a trio of event series.
The Story Behind Our Name, Hippocampus Magazine. The hippocampus is what makes enjoying great memoir possible because, without it, memories would not exist. The hippocampus is the sea-horse-shaped part of the brain where long-term memories are formed. (That also explains our logo!)
