The ill-fated Donner-Reed party and others took this route. Near the Bear River, Brigham Young was taken ill with mountain fever. Orson Pratt, with twenty-three wagons and forty-two men, was sent ahead to locate the Donner-Reed Trail. They did so, and by July 19, the advance party reached the summit of Big Mountain.

A black man born into slavery, Beckwourth was freed by his master, who was also his father. He was a blacksmith apprentice before moving to the West to become a trapper.
Trask died in 1863 at the age of forty-nine from an unidentified fever known as “the mountain malady.” He was buried on a hillside on his own claim. The Trask River, which emptied into Tillamook Bay, and Trask Mountain (3,412 feet) in the northern Oregon Coast Range were named after him.
The following year Judah created a hand drawn map of the proposed alignment of the Central Pacific Railroad (pictured) now in the collection of the California State Archives. Judah’s map is the longest map in the archives, measuring 794 inches long and 30 inches wide and having a scale of 400 feet to the inch.
The Goldville district is about 14 miles long and showed great activity in the early days, when the population of the town reached 3,000. Hog Mountain is unique in Alabama in that gold veins are in granite, and here the cyanide process was first introduced into the state. The Devil's Backbone district lies in a belt of the Wedowee Formation.
