Feb 10, 2022 · The incubation period in humans is 3-12 day, with an average of 7 days. In the early stages, RMSF fever can be difficult to diagnose. A classic triad of fever, pin -point rash and tick exposure is suggestive; however, the rash appears several days after the other symptoms, and the tick may not have been noticed.

It was originally called “black measles” because of the look of its rash in the late stages of the illness, when the skin turns black. It was a dreaded, often fatal disease, affecting hundreds of people in Idaho.
