The lands that today comprise Croatia were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of World War I. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia.
The period from the 15th to the 17th centuries was marked by intense struggles between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Habsburg Empire to the north. Following the First World War and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Croatian lands were incorporated into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
According to the legend it was built by the Zadar bishop Donatus in the 9th century and in the 10th it is mentioned in the famous work "De Administrando Imperio" by the Byzantine emperor Constantine VII. Originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity, it was called by the name of Saint Donatus from the 15th century.
