May 25, 2020 · Now it is all fenced off and the gates are locked. Knapp’s Castle was rumored to be under development in recent years and I avoided going there. It is probably at least a dozen years since I tried to go in. On Saturday there were quite a few visitors and no signs saying to keep out. But, sure enough, the place was under major re-construction.

Knapp's Castle is a frequent escape for locals when Santa Barbara is foggy (usually May and June) because the mountain top is usually above the clouds with a spectacular view of a non-foggy backcountry. To drive to Knapp's Castle exit the U.S. 101 Freeway at Highway 154 and then turn east on Camino Cielo Road at the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains.
