The first commercial mining took place near Molteno, in the Eastern Cape, in 18701. The discovery of diamonds at Kimberley in 1870 and gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 increased the demand for coal, with new mines opening in Vereeniging in 1879 and Witbank in 1895.

History Witbank was founded in 1890 and early attempts to exploit the coal deposits failed until the railway from Pretoria reached the area in 1894. It was proclaimed a town in 1903 and became a municipality in 1914.
