Hohenschwangau Castle sits in the village of Schwangau in Bavaria, Germany, and was built in the 19th century. The castle was a fortress to protect the nearby town of Füssen. The castle was destroyed in the 16th century during the German Peasants’ War. A ruin until the 19th century when it was rebuilt by King Maximilian II of Bavaria.
Schloss Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau Castle) is one of the four famous castles attributed to ‘Mad’ King Ludwig of Bavaria, Germany. Hohenschwangau is the smallest of Ludwig’s four eccentric creations, but it has a special, homely atmosphere which sets it apart from his other three palaces – which are a little colder and more formal.
The interior and exterior design, the furnishings of the rooms and the more than 90 wall paintings are coordinated and blend into a harmonious whole. The complex, as created by Maximilian and his artist-architect, has been preserved as an extraordinary architectural monument from the Romantic era.
Restoration work is currently being carried out inside the Neuschwanstein Castle. The renovations are expected to last until 2024. Until summer 2023, the bedroom, the dressing room, the living room and the grotto will unfortunately be closed to the public .
This was a great tour of a beautiful castle. The castle is extremely well kept and filled with original furniture, artwork and beautiful decorations. The horse carriage to take you up to the castle is right near the ticket office at the base of the hill, or you could walk up to the castle which takes around 15 minutes from the ticket office.
