The series is created and executive produced by showrunners Dana Fox and Dara Resnik. It is written and executive produced by Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner. It is executive produced by Joy Gorman Wettels for Anonymous Content, Rosemary Rodriguez and Sharlene Martin.
Paramount Television and Anonymous Content developed the television show based on the six books, Hilde Cracks the Case, written by Hilde Lysiak. The main characters are based on Lysiak and her sister and photographer, Izzy, with fictionalized versions of real stories that Lysiak has written. Paramount and Anonymous Content optioned Lysiak's life story, as she broke a local murder case at the age of nine, established Orange Street News, and is the youngest person to deliver a college commencement speech. Apple announced in 2018 that they would be producing the series titled Home Before Dark, with Brooklynn Prince in the lead role of Lysiak. Home Before Dark premiered on Apple TV+ on April 3, 2020.
