- Trulia. I spent months casually checking both Zillow and Trulia daily before buying my first house a few years ago. Zillow bought Trulia in 2015, so the two websites are pretty similar and very easy to use.
- Redfin. Redfin is similar to Zillow and Trulia in the sense that you can view houses in map or list format, and you can easily maneuver around the site.
- Realtor.com. As the official site of the National Association of Realtors, Realtor.com is said to have the most up-to-date information available from the MLS.
- Homefinder.com. Homefinder.com is another well-organized site — it presents listings by category, like new construction, foreclosures, and classifieds — but I found I couldn’t quite zoom in as much as I wanted on its map feature, which meant it took me outside the neighborhood I wanted.

- Redfin: the best for actual house hunting. Redfin is my favorite site for comparing listings and keeping track of homes I've found while house hunting.
- Zillow: to see what your home might be worth. Zillow is one of the most popular and comprehensive home search websites, though I felt Redfin was generally easier to use.
- Google Maps: to see the neighborhood and how it's changed. Google Maps isn't just for directions; the desktop version can give you a 3D map with satellite imagery for seeing a neighborhood.
- GreatSchools.org and your local public schools website. GreatSchools.org is a useful site that rates local schools and lets you compare them on various metrics.
