This is a list of monarchs of Hesse (German: Hessen) during the history of Hesse on west-central Germany. These monarchs belonged to a dynasty collectively known as the House of Hesse and the House of Brabant, originally the Reginar. Its capital city is Wiesbaden, and the largest urban area is Frankfurt, which is also the country's principal financial centre. Two other major historic cities are Darmstadt and Kassel.
The fall of 1943 was to be a devastating one for the Hessen family. On October 7, Christoph boarded a plane in Italy to return to Germany. The aircraft struck a mountain at 1,000 feet, killing Christoph and the pilot instantly. His wife, Princess Sophie, was widowed at 29, pregnant with their fifth child.
