My interpretation is different, to an degree, but I like the connection between being grown and the tall man being this hulking thing. My interpretation is that he encounters the Tall Man (William Hill) by a degree of chance. He finds the hat and the ghost follows. But he's not really haunted by William outside of his time in the house.
