It’s nice to walk on the pier during Covid because it is less crowded. It is a short pier and at the end, there is a Ruby’s Diner. There are a lot of fishermen on the pier catching mackerel. There are also a lot of wooden benches along the pier to sit and take the view. The view of the beach from pier is really nice. The pier has restrooms.

Not to jinx it, but parking for Balboa Pier is so much better than the parking at the Newport Pier. However, it can still get very crowded. Parking is free after 6pm in off-peak, otherwise it is a small fee to park. Pay at the kiosk with credit/debit card. The pier tends to have quite a bit of people fishing most of the time.

Take the ferry across the bay ($1.25 each way) and then walk over to the beach and pier. It's just a fun place with a nice vibe. Be aware that there are all the COVID restrictions in place right now so be prepared to wear a mask and social distance appropriately. It wasn't crowded on a weekday morning so that was a plus.
