    In my pop music/pop culture class in Uni (a long long time ago) waves were used to refer to "times of popularity." 2Tone was the subgenre of ska that was most popular during the 2nd wave, but it wasn't "the wave" as there were other styles (like trad ska/reggae, or skinhead reggae) that also gained popularity in the moment.
