The tap water in Amman is safe to drink, but we know a lot of travellers are hesitant to do this in an unfamiliar country. After the Ptolemaic Greeks took control of Amman, in 285 BC, Ptolemy II changed its name from Robbat Ammon to "Philadelphia". Philadelphia means the city of brotherly love. He named it after the leader "Philadelphia."

It has been known by names like Rabath Amman and Philadelphia. Today, it is like an open-air museum, within the fortified walls.
