Lyme disease in dogs. Lyme disease is an illness caused by a type of bacteria ( Borrelia burgdorferi) that’s transmitted through certain ticks. Both animals (dogs, cats, and horses) and people can become infected with these bacteria. A small percentage (5% to 10%) of infected dogs go on to develop signs of illness—which can be quite severe.

Ticks become active as the weather warms and will gladly approach pets for a meal. But, some ticks carry and transmit diseases, which puts our close-to-the-ground friends at high risk.
In the United States, Lyme disease is the most commonly diagnosed tick-borne disease of dogs and humans; the primary causative agent, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, is transmitted via the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (deer tick).
Transmission. Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which lives inside a specific type of tick called a black-legged tick, or deer tick. These are very small ticks, ranging from the size of a poppy seed to a sesame seed.
